Personnel Changes Under Gorbachev
Reviews key personnel changes since Gorbachev became party leader.
Assesses expected impact of personnel changes since 1981 on the new CPSU
Central Committee to be elected at the February 1986 Congress.
The Forthcoming CPSU Program
Examines the significance of the forthcoming CPSU program and identifies
some of the issues which it will address. An appendix will include the
texts of the previous (1961) program and other relevant documents.
Shevardnadze on International Issues
A collection of excerpts of statements by Edward Shevardnadze on key
foreign policy issues.
Soviet Statements on Nuclear Test Limitations
Reviews major Soviet statements and proposals on the limitation of
nuclear weapons tests since the beginning of the Reagan Administration.
Soviet Handling of SDI Research
Assesses authoritative statements dealing specifically with the question

Soviet-North Korean Relations
An assessment of the evolving relationship in the light of how both sides
treat the 15 August anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese rule.
Soviet, Cuban Treatment of Chilean Opposition Movement
Surveys Soviet and Cuban attitudes toward the growing opposition movement
in Chile against the Pinochet regime. Also reviews Soviet and Cuban
support for the Chilean Communist Party.
Soviet Protocol for Visits of Third World Leaders
Examines Soviet handling of visits by Third World leaders to Moscow in an
effort to determine standing protocol for different orders of visits,
such as "official," "working," "unofficial," and others.
China's Open Door Policy
Traces evolution of Chinese policy of opening to the outside world,
concentrating on the special Economic Zones concept: establishment of
the Shenzhen zone on a trial basis, touting of it as a model for all of
China, and recent statements suggesting a return to a more tentative
approach.
Beijing's Relationship With the Philippines
A review of PRC media treatment of the Philippines in the 10 years since
establishment of diplomatic relations, tracing changes in Beijing's
attitude toward legal and insurgent opposition to Marcos as well as
toward manila's role as a U.S. ally and member of ASEAN.
Pyongyang's Search for Dialogue
Analyzes the evolution during the past year of Pyongyang's public policy
regarding North-South dialogue and tripartite talks.

North Korean Economic Reform
Assesses Pyongyang's recent effort to promote the use of material
incentives to spur economic production. The evolution of the North's
attempt to provide ideological justification for the new policy will also
be discussed.
Egyptian Perceptions of U.S. Assistance Programs
Focuses on Egyptian media commentary on the value and impact of U.S.
economic and military aid programs in Egypt.
Egyptian Media Perceptions of Israel: An Update
Surveys recent mainstream press treatment of Israel, updating Special
Memorandum published in June 1984.
The Debate in Egypt Over Application of the Shari'ah
Examines the positions of the various parties on application of the
Shari'ah (Islamic law) in Egypt as reflected in the Cairo press.
Application of the Shari'ah has become a rallying point for Islamic
fundamentalists and a divisive issue in Egyptian society.
Iran: Redefining the Presidency
With the forthcoming presidential elections as a backdrop, will examine
reporting and commentary in Tehran media on attempts by the Majlis to
redefine and limit the duties and responsibilities of the Iranian
president.
PLO Mainstream Attitudes Toward Cooperation With Jordan
Examines the attitudes of key aides and supporters of Yasir 'Arafat
toward the 11 February agreement with Jordan on Middle East peace
negotiations.

LONGER TERM PROJECTS
Prospects for U.S.-Soviet Relations: Contending Soviet Views
Examines the views of Soviet specialists on foreign policy regarding
prospects for U.S.-Soviet relations during the second Reagan
Administration and beyond. Will focus on differing perceptions of the
goals of the Reagan Administration, of the breadth of support for
Administration policy both in the United States and abroad, and of the
constraints on Washington's ability to implement its objectives.
Soviet News Agencies, Radio, and Television
Examines the structure, functions, and technical capabilities of the
Soviet news agencies (TASS and Novosti) and the radio and television
systems, on the international, all-union, and regional levels. The
report, which is based on Soviet sources, briefly traces the history of
each of these organizations and describes their current operations in the
context of the Soviet leadership's requirements for effective propaganda.
Moscow's Institute of Economics of the World Socialist System
Examines current work at the Institute of Economics of the World
Socialist System, which in recent years has been the leading center in
the Soviet Union for proposals for economic and political reform.
Reviews both the ideas coming out of the institute and the specialists
working there.
Chinese Military Attitudes Toward Sino-Soviet Normalization
Compares treatment of Sino-Soviet relations by persons and media
associated with the PLA with that by other sources since bilateral
consultations began in 1982. Intended to be the first of a series of
analyses looking for disparities between military and party treatment of
several domestic and foreign policy topics.
