Pyongyang's Search for Dialogue Analyzes the evolution during the past year of Pyongyang's public policy regarding North-South dialogue and tripartite talks. Application of the Shari'ah has become a rallying point for Islamic fundamentalists and a divisive issue in Egyptian society. Iran: Redefining the Presidency With the forthcoming presidential elections as a backdrop, will examine reporting and commentary in Tehran media on attempts by the Majlis to redefine and limit the duties and responsibilities of the Iranian president. PLO Mainstream Attitudes Toward Cooperation With Jordan Examines the attitudes of key aides and supporters of Yasir 'Arafat toward the 11 February agreement with Jordan on Middle East peace negotiations. Will focus on differing perceptions of the goals of the Reagan Administration, of the breadth of support for Administration policy both in the United States and abroad, and of the constraints on Washington's ability to implement its objectives. Soviet News Agencies, Radio, and Television Examines the structure, functions, and technical capabilities of the Soviet news agencies (TASS and Novosti) and the radio and television systems, on the international, all-union, and regional levels. The report, which is based on Soviet sources, briefly traces the history of each of these organizations and describes their current operations in the context of the Soviet leadership's requirements for effective propaganda. Moscow's Institute of Economics of the World Socialist System Examines current work at the Institute of Economics of the World Socialist System, which in recent years has been the leading center in the Soviet Union for proposals for economic and political reform. Reviews both the ideas coming out of the institute and the specialists working there. Chinese Military Attitudes Toward Sino-Soviet Normalization Compares treatment of Sino-Soviet relations by persons and media associated with the PLA with that by other sources since bilateral consultations began in 1982. Intended to be the first of a series of analyses looking for disparities between military and party treatment of several domestic and foreign policy topics.
