FOREIGN BROADCAST INFORMATION SERVICE
Of Special Interest This Week
+ FBIS Panama Bureau remained open 24 hours on the day of the
Mexican earthquake to monitor breaking developments from Mexican
television. Southern Command staff officers visited the bureau to view
damage on television in order to brief the CINCSC on possible disaster
assistance.
+ At the request of Under Secretary of Defense Ikle, FBIS located
several items from Soviet media cited in a Moscow Embassy cable as
examples of anti-U.S. propaganda leading up to the Soviet-U.S. summit.
+ The House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe and the Middle
East has recently started receiving FBIS Middle East analyses and has
requested inclusion on distribution for FBIS Soviet analytic reports.
+ At the request of the IC Staff, FBIS is summarizing a
Finnish-language book on parapsychological phenomena and research. The
book was brought to the attention of Admiral Burkhalter by a source who
said that the Soviets have shown much interest in the author's work.
FBIS is looking for information in the book which might have operati
political, or military applications to explain the Soviet interest.
+ FBIS issued a special report for Agency officials on 23 September
rounding up reaction to the U.S. white paper, "Foreign Reaction to Report
on Technology Transfer to USSR." There has been limited international
reaction thus far, though the Soviets have predictably denounced the
paper.
