Meanwhile, ABC News has learned of a new US plan aimed at stopping the flow of army to guerrillas in El Salvador. Sam Donaldson reports. SAM DONALDSON: The ideas discussed by Administration officials with Argentina would be to infiltrate the Argentine paramilitary forces into Nicaragua. Once there they would operate in guerrilla fashion to choke off the supply of arms to rebels in El Salvador and it all went well, they woiuld mount a counter- revolution against the leftist Sandinista government of Nicaragua. The congressional source who told ABC News of the Adminis- tration's idea does not know whether the discussions with Argentine officials led anywhere. And a senior White House official declined to commment on the story one way or the other. But on Tuesday, Secretary of State Haig made it clear on Capitol Hill that allied help in El Salvador is important. SECRETARY OF STATE HAIG: Cooperating with our friends and allies In the region, we will do whatever is necessary to con- tain the threat. DONALDSON: Exploring this option of enlisting forces from another Latin American country to help El Salvador makes sense from the Administratration's viewpoint.
