SUBJECT CIA Report on South Africa and Namibia
JACK ANDERSON: Fifteen years ago the United Nations
ordered South Africa out of Namibia but the occupation still con-
tinues.
Here is the Inside Story. The headlines are dominated
by developments in Latin America but here is an important story
you haven't read.
South Africa continues to occupy Namibia forcibly despite
a 15-year-old United Nations resolution ordered South Africa to pull
out.
Now Namibia is a vast wasteland, mostly barren desert about
the size of Texas but is fantastically endowed with valuable minerals,
mostly diamonds and uranium.
I have seen a top secret CIA report on South Africa's involve-
ment there. They have a 20,000 man police force stationed in Namibia
with millions of dollars worth of private investments to protect.
As early as 1966 South Africa was skimming $256 million a
year off of Namibia's economy.
Let me quote from this secret report: the South Africans
have administered the territory virtually as a province. They have
regarded Namibia as a substantially economic asset.
