JACK ANDERSON: The worldwide oil glut has meant cheap
prices at the gas pump but the Russians might have helped.
Americans are cheering lowered gas prices. The result
of a worldwide oil glut.
But here is a part of the story you haven't heard. The
Soviet Union may have a hidden hand in the oil market.
Let me explain. Intelligence analysts say Russia has
been selling weapons to Libya and Iran. In exchange for the arms
the Soviets are being paid in oil.
I've reviewed secret State Department cables warning
that Russia may be dumping its oil on the international market.
Now that may sound like good news to Americans. More
oil on the market means lower gas prices. But that is not why
the Soviets are dumping their supplies.
My sources say the Kremlin is trying to manipulate
the price of oil and create chaos in Western markets.
The oil glut may keep the cost low but it leads to an
unstable and unpredictable situation for international business.
If the Soviets can quietly get a handle on the world
prices they could at will bring the Western economy to the brink
of disaster.
