Approved For Release 2007/05/18: CIA-RDP88-01070R000100230022-6 RADIO N REPORTS, INC. 4701 WILLARD AVENUE, CHEVY CHASE, MARYLAND 20815 656-4068 CNN2 News STATION WMAR-TV CNN Network DATE June 17, 1982 2:00 A.M. CITY Baltimore, Md. NEWSMAN: A former CIA agent will be transferred to Washington this week to be arraigned on charges he trained Libyan terrorists. Edwin Wilson waived a hearing Wednesday in New York on whether he could be removed. Jeanie Most has a report. JEANIE MOST: In court Wednesday morning, Edwin Wilson looked more like a chairman of a board than a criminal defendant. Nevertheless, he faces a maximum of life imprisonment on charges of transporting arms, and even conspiring to assassinate a Libyan dissident. Wilson was arrested Tuesday at Kennedy Airport. According to published reports, he had grown tired of living in Libya, and was assured by those he trusted that he might find a new safe haven in the Dominican Republic. But those he trusted were reportedly cooperating with the Justice Department. And when Wilson arrived in the Dominican Republic, he was put on a plane for New York. Wilson waived his right to a removal hearing, which gave officials the green light to transfer him to Washington. Wilson, hiding behind his New York Times, is being held on $20 million bail, bail set so high because Wilson is both wealthy and wily. Not a good bail risk, as they say. Wilson's defense attorney, John Keats, was asked about the possibility of plea bargaining to reduce charges for his client in exchange for Wilson's cooperation with investigators. But the defense attorney was noncommittal, characterizing the case this way: OFFICES IN: WASHINGTON D.C. ? NEW YORK ? LOS ANGELES ? CHICAGO ? DETROIT ? REPORTER: Why do you say that? KEATS: It's going to be a long and tedious trial, if it goes to trial. REPORTER: But it will be an adventure? KEATS: Any case like this is an adventure. REPORTER: Why would you think it wouldn't go to trial? KEATS: [Inaudible]... what can happen. REPORTER: Pardon me? KEATS: You never know what can happen. REPORTER: It sounds like something of a deal is in MOST: The speculation is that Edwin Wilson knows a lot that could be embarrassing to the CIA, a lot that could come out in open court.
