CBS EVENING NEWS
5 September 1984
LIBYA/ RATHER: In a speech last weekend, Libya's Moammar Khadafy
TERRORISM revealed that some of his countrymen were plotting a
takeover of Mecca, where 2 million Moslems now are on a
holy pilgrimage. Khadafy publicly told the plotters,
'Don't do it.' But now, it turns out, he secretly told
them something else. Bill McLaughlin reports.
MCLAUGHLIN: CBS News has learned that Libyan leader,
Moammar Khadafy, has sent coded messages to his agents in
Saudi Arabia, telling them to ignore public disclaimers
and proceed with a plan to seize the holy places in Mecca,
Saudi Arabia. Fears of Libyan terrorist activity were
also at the center of talks at the State Department today
between senior U.S. officials and *Reeder Giderra, chief
aide to Morocco's King Hassan. Giderra came to Washington
to explain his country's sudden alliance with radical
Libya. CBS News has learned that as part of its deal
Morocco turned over to Libya a leading member of the
anti-Khadafy resistance movement, *Ommar *Mulheachy.
Mulheachy was turned over to Col. Khadafy and to almost
certain death. Even more worrying for the U.S. is the
secret promise King Hassan made to lend Libya 30,000
troops to fight under Khadafy's control in the event of
another Arab-Israeli war. In return, King Hassan also
believes Khadafy will stop financing attempts to overthrow
him and will no longer back the rebels in the western
Sahara who have been battling the Moroccan army for almost
a decade. But U.S. and other Western intelligence
agencies believe King Hassan has been duped. Sources
close to the international terrorist movement have told
CBS News that Col. Khadafy has privately reassured his
revolutionary committees that he will continue to work for
the overthrow of all the kings of the Arab world,
including Morocco's King Hassan. Bill McLaughlin, CBS
News, the State Department.
