THE UNITED STATES.
THE INTENTION OF THIS RELEASE IS TO ALERT THE AMi_,.RICAN AND IRANIAN
PEOPLES IN TIME TO PREVENT A CIA?`PENTAGON O11(,:L ATION OPPOSED BY I
OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF AMERICAN AND IRANIAN CITIZENS.
1) On September 11, 1978, President Carter personally ph(oied the S)iah.to state that
the U. S. Government totally supported him.
2) In November, '1 978, Carter called Richard M. Helms to the White House for a see
retive, "lengthy discussion" on Iran (W. Pq, 12/6/78, p. A-18). Former CIA Dirt,., tor
Helms, a boyhood friend of the Shah's, conducted many CIA "dirty works" operations
Iran and elsewhere including the 1973 coup in Chile.
3) During Helm's tenure as CIA Director, avcording to Jesse J. Leaf, then CIA Chi+
analyst on Iran, the CIA provided torture *erninars to SAVAK officials, Leaf was at
informed at the time that the CIA had a specific "line" on Iran and that was total support
of the Shah; and CIA bureaucrats and ax>talyvtl~ had to conform to this line(NY Timetw, 1 /7/
