GREATER WASHINGTON, D. C.

Dear Angus:
I decided to poach a little on one of my other roles in
life for this note -- therefore the CCA letterhead note paper.
First of all, t1iis Xerox of the S:aarthM ore Alumni Bulletin
is only av temporary stand-in. I'll send you a proper copy as
soon as I got more fro?2 tre college.
You probably don't know hcw large a hand you played in this
piece. You rocogniae, of course, that the title: "The Top secret
Slurry Caper" is yours. And you must - realize that I had intended
your latest memo, ending "put that in your canoe and paddle it!",
as lrmy closi.rg note. Unfortuntcly, ??":rs. Gi.llespie, the Editor,
worked it into the fabric of the story, telling us that the Top
Secret Slurry is now reforesting the strip -0.ne areas ...s Thus,
we get the facts but none of the delightful flavor.
That you may not realize is that you saved this story from
oblivion. Security found nothing of a security nature to disturb
the Agency, but they didn't like the story. They felt; they said,
that I was ridiculing the Agency, placing it in a bad light. Your
first note of appreciation and pleasure in the story effectively
counteracted this bit of stuffyness. And, as you i now, I think I
ua.s praising, not ridiculing the; Agency.
And so, my warmest thanks for your help and support. I hope
the Caper gets a wider circulation soon.
Sincerely,
John Seabury Th-nson
