P n,1ORANDUM FOR: Joseph C. Goodwin
SUBJECT: Lunch with Mr. Edward O'Brien,
Newhouse Newspapers (ST LOUIS GLOBE-
DEMOCRAT)
1. On 3 February 1967 I had lunch with Mr. Edward
O'Brien of ewhouse publications.
2. He ro'o'med me that his secretary, Miss Judith
Coburn, is leaving his office and plans to write a book on
the use of government funds in research at universities. Mr.
O'Brien believes she will involve CIA and may be calling
us for information. He indicated that she is a leftist in
her political beliefs; has a father who partially owns the
paper, and was given a job in Washington to give her a more
realistic outlook (which apparently hasn't happened).
3. Mr. O'Brien is afraid she will use his good
reputation to gain entrance to CIA.
1I. He also indicated concern over the Fulbrigh-
letter incident which he considered a mistake on his paper's
part and I assured him that we did not harbor any ill will
because of this.
5. He expressed a desire to meet you and T told him
we will keep this in mind.
