Approved For Release 2006/12/.04: 4ROOO1 5 NOV 970 STAT 1 u. cj.cv wan Nikita S. Khrushchev, who was ousted as Soviet Premier In 1964, was described yester. day as having offered his rem. iniscences for publication to help improve the Soviet Com= munist party and to guide fu- tuure generations, according to l an announcement in Life mag- azine's issue dated Nov. 20. The material is to be pub- lished in Life under the title, "Khrushchev Remembers," in dts following four issues and as a 275,000-word book on Dec. 21 by. Little, Brown & Com- pany. It is to be presented en- tirely "in the first person," Life said. Life published a statement attributed to Mr. Khrushchev that said: "I tell these stories because, unpleasant as they may be, they contribute to the self- purification of our party. "What I say is not slander, and it's not malicious gossip. I speak. as a man who stood for'many years at $talin's side. As a witness to those years, I address myself to the gener- ations of the future in hope that they will avoid the mis- takes of the past." Time Inc., which own both Life and the book company, continued to refuse to discuss the origin of the material. In Moscow, Mr. Khrushchev's wife was quoted as having said on Nov. 7 that her husband had not written 'any memoirs. The next day, the "remem brances" were described by Pierre Lazareff, publisher of France-Soir in Paris, which is to run excerpts, as recorded on tapes in Mr. Khrushchev's voice. The National' Broadcasting Company in 1967 broadcast a program it said had been derived from about five hours of such recordings. Some sources said Time had obtained about 20 hours of tapes.
