News & World Report Mr. Angus Thuermer Assistant for the Director Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D.C. 20505 October 17, 1974 S6 CL.cr. ) U.S. - _ Dear Angus: As you will see from the enclosed copy of a letter, we would like very much to set up an interview with Mr. Colby in order to try to clear the air in the controversy over the need for an intelligence organization in contemporary America. I tried to reach you to discuss the project but found you were on vacation. I do want to make sure, however, that I don't cross wires there and hope very much that you will throw your considerable weight behind this proposal. I think that it would offer an exceptional opportunity to put this very confused picture into some perspective in circumstances that would guarantee accuracy. Sincerely, enclosure: ,TF/ag AsPocia.te Executive Editor C, i-vvl Approved For Release 2004/10/12 : CIA-RDP88-01314R000300280019-3 Approved For Release 2004/10/12 : CIA-RDP88-0131480003002800 9Ce~`x~1Ve?;~ Fle o U. WASHINGTON, D.C. 20037 J L c;s.yff,,vK October 10, 1974 Mr. William Colby Director Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D.C. 20505 Dear Mr. Colby: I was glad to hear the other day when I returned from London that you found my article on the CIA in the September 16 issue of U.S. News & World :Report a fair and balanced presentation of an exceedingly controversial situation. Now I would like to propose a project that I think would contribute a great deal to a more realistic and intelligent understanding of the role of the CIA, its contribution to American security and the peculiar problems of operating a foreign intelligence organization in the current political climate in this country. What I have in mind is, of aLr j a ?oxinterviews. This would offer you an opportunity to answer the questions that are widely being asked about your organization with full confidence that your views would be presented accurately. We would conduct the interview in our conference room--which is appropriately "bugged" for the purpose. The final, edited version would be submitted. to you for any corrections that you wished to make. The interview would be published in the form finally approved by you. I do hope that you will find it possible to accept this proposal and that we can arrange to schedule the interview session 1; r_early_.da es. I look forward to hearing from you. With kindest personal regards, I am Sincerely, e ph F *omm J /ag Approved For Release 2004/10/12 : CIA-RDP88-01314R000300280019-3
