Enclosed, "hot off the press," is a copy of the new edition of our
book, Perspectives 1978. We at CLOSE UP wish to express our gratitude
for your important contribution toward making this book even more
interesting than our 1977 edition. We are confident that your article
will be read and appreciated by many of the 13,000 students and teachers
expected to participate in our 1978 program. In addition, a Library of
Congress catalog number has been requested so as to include our book in
their collection.
CLOSE UP has annually published Perspectives for use as a resource
by the students participating in our program. Prior to 1977, the book
consisted of articles reprinted from newspapers, journals, books and
other sources. The 1977 edition marked the first time that the book
contained original articles written especially for CLOSE UP students.
Students and teachers found it to be interesting as well as informative,
and numerous school systems requested copies for use in their government
courses. In fact, in the Detroit Public Schools (Region Two) a new
course was designed with CLOSE UP as a model and Perspectives 1977 as a
textbook. We were able to donate these books because of a surplus left
at the conclusion of last year's programs.
This year's new, more comprehensive edition has already been
requested by many teachers for use in their classrooms. However, with a
projection of an increased number of participants, we do not foresee a
surplus of books at the end of this year's programs. For next year's
edition (1979), therefore, we are exploring the possibilities of printing
additional copies and making them available on a wider basis for govern-
ment studies courses. This might also help us develop a source of
revenue for additional student and teacher fellowships, as well as for
program development. We will be in touch in the near future with more
information concerning these plans.
