elmont has welcomed distinguished visitors with
warmth and grace since 1738, when Caleb Dorsey of
Annapolis built the splendid Georgian mansion as the
manor house of one of Maryland's great estates.
It remained so for more than 200 years, passing through
generations of the family until the Smithsonian Institution
acquired it from Ambassador and Mrs. David K. E. Bruce
in 1964. As the Smithsonian's Conference Center from
1967 to 1983, Belmont hosted hundreds of groups from
government, business, and the scientific and academic
communities.
Purchased by the American Chemical Society in 1983,
Belmont continues to offer a gracious atmosphere and
private working environment to all groups concerned with
the pursuit and sharing of knowledge.

Exclusively Yours !
Belmont, the American Chemi-
cal Society's Conference Cen-
ter at Elkridge, Maryland is
exclusively yours, whether your
conference is for a day or a
week.
You will never play second
fiddle to a massive gathering of
enthusiastic conventioneers...
or be trampled in the annual
spring sightseeing migration of
high school students.
At Belmont, the full time and
attention of an expert, efficient,
unobtrusive staff is devoted to
?vourgroup's needs for the length
of your conference.
Concentration is Everything
Concentration, experts assure
us, is vital to most human activ-
ities, from creative cooking to
creative thinking to business
planning.
In addition to being exclu-
sively yours, Belmont is totally
focused on providing the kind
of atmosphere, organization, and
service that permit total con-
centration on your conference
goals.
Other Benefits
First of all, Belmont is conven-
ient to the great Baltimore/
Washington metropolitan com-
plex, and indeed to more dis-
tant metropolitan areas, as mod-
ern rail and air transportation
can make it.
Yet it is as far removed from
urban clatter and clutter as if
conference participants had
turned off Interstate 95 between
Baltimore and Washington, and
driven into the 18th Century.
When you are welcomed at
the door of Belmont, you step
into a warmly and elegantly fur-
nished 18th Century manor
house to be entertained as a
guest. Distractions fade, and you
can be completely committed
to the purpose of your meeting.
In fact, the entire estate, its
acres of fields and woodlands,
largely unchanged for almost
250 years, is at your disposal to
use and enjoy. You will also find
that a happy accommodation
of Georgian architecture to
modern needs makes Belmont
a uniquely effective conference
center.
The principal conference
room is comfortably furnished,
modern and well lighted, with
audiovisual equipment and
other conference needs at hand.
However, the living rooms of
the manor are comfortable for
small-group sub-meetings, for
conversation, for reading, and
for reflection. The spacious
dining room is a separate area,
to be prepared for meals with-
out disturbing the work of the
conference.
Careful advance planning and
an experienced Belmont con-
ference staff make it possible to
anticipate the needs of confer-
ence personnel and provide
them unobtrusively.
Belmont can be exclusively
yours! The following pages will
tell you how.

he Seasons of
Belmont
At Belmont, every season has
its own appeal and charm for
our guests.
Spring greets arrivals with
wildflowers along the access
road to the manor and in the
fields, and masses of azaleas to
set off the front of the house.
Belmont's spectacular lilacs
must be seen to be believed.
Summer offers guests exclu-
sive use of our swimming pool
with its own dressing rooms and
telephone service, as well as use
of a well surfaced and main-
tained tennis court. There's also
a jogging trail with marked
exercise stations, and equip-
ment is available for impromptu
games like volleyball and horse-
shoe pitching. And Belmont's
summer gardens are in bloom.
Fall is often the loveliest
season of the year. The weather
can be delightful, the wood-
lands are dressed in their best
fall colors, and deer and other
wildlife can often be glimpsed
along Belmont's walking trails.
Even winter can be beautiful
on crisp clear days, sometimes
with snow on the ground. On
other days, our working fire-
places provide a comfortable
atmosphere and invite reflec-
tion. Snow removal on Belmont
Woods Road is normally more
thorough than that provided on
public roads.
Belmont offers miles of care-
fully marked walking trails
through the grounds of the
estate, as well as opportunities
to meet the Belmont horses ...
reminders that thoroughbreds
were raised here for many years.
Other Recreation
Belmont offers television,
though not in sleeping quarters,
and an excellent library. For
those who may wish to explore
on the way to and from a con-
ference, or during any exten-
sive period of free time, the
sights and cultural events of
Washington are less than an
hour's drive away, and Balti-
more's spectacular Harbor Place
development and aquarium are
a short 20-minute drive.

Your Belmont
Conference
How Large a Conference?
Within the limits of Belmont's
accommodations, you may be
flexible in your planning. The
house accommodates 25 over-
night guests in 15 comfortable
bedrooms, ten doubles and five
singles. The conference room
is normally arranged for 25
participants. However, it can
accommodate 35. There are din-
ing facilities for 35.
For meetings having more
overnight guests than Belmont's
in-house maximum of 25, we
will be happy to book the addi-
tional guests into a nearby mo-
tel at the conference rate.
If your conference requires
more single rooms than Belmont
can provide, we will make the
same motel arrangements for
extra guests, but may need to
make an additional service
charge since the house will not
be used to capacity.
Belmont, of course, is a resi-
dential conference center and
is most effectively used that way.
However, we can occasionally
schedule a one-day conference,
and we are always happy to ac-

commodate additional commut-
ing participants attending a
residential conference.
Belmont is Completely at Your
Service
The Belmont house and grounds
are completely at your disposal
during your conference. Your
conference fee includes three
excellent meals per day, all
needed meeting supplies such
as pencils, pens, paper, news-
print boards, and audiovisual
equipment, although we do ask
that you list your AN equip-
ment needs in advance of your
meetings to provide time for
set-up.
In good weather, the swim-
ming pool and tennis court are
available for your exclusive use.
In addition a jogging trail
with exercise stations can en-
hance your pleasure with Bel-
mont in most any weather. We'll
even set up outdoor meetings
on fine days if you wish.
Making Reservations and
Meeting Arrangements
Belmont management will be
glad to accept a tentative reser-
vation; however, early confir-
mation is required. Guarantees
for rooms and for each meal
are required five business days
before the beginning of a meet-
ing. We ask that meeting coor-
dinators make room assignments
and send a copy to Belmont
with copies of the agenda, and
a f u// guest list including partici-
pants, guests, speakers, and staff.
If You Must Cancel or Change
Dates ...
If you must cancel or change
dates for a confirmed meeting,
we will make every effort to re-
place your group with another
one. However, if that proves
impossible, the following
charges will be made:
Cancellation 30 to 60 days
prior to meeting date, 25%,
of the expected total charge
based on length of meet-
ing and number of partici-
pants, plus a S 100 adminis-
trative fee.
Cancellation 14 to 30 days
prior to meeting date, 50%>
of expected total charge,
plus a S 100 administrative
fee.
Cancellation less than 14
days prior to meeting date,
75%, of expected total
charge, plus a 5100 admin-
istrative fee.
If we are able to replace your
group with another of equal or
larger size, we will charge only
a S 100 administrative fee. If the
new group is significantly
smaller than yours, we will also
charge a percentage of the dif-
ference in revenue, based on
cancellation date percentages
above.
Transportation
Conference participants who ar-
rive by air or by train should
arrange ticketing to Baltimore/
Washington International Air-
port (there's also an AMTRAK
station at the airport). Because
of wide differences in arrival
times, we are not able to meet
planes or trains, but BWI is an
approximate 10-minute cab or
rental car ride from Belmont.
We can assist with transporta-
tion arrangements for depart-
ing guests and are happy to do
so.
