Mr. McCone began his business career in the steel business with
Llewellyn Iron Works; and subsequently became Executive Vice Presi-
dent and Director of Consolidated Steel Corporation, which company
was later acquired by United States Steel Corporation.
In 1937 Mr. McCone joined Stephen Bechtel in forming the
Bechtel-McCone Corporation and he became President and Director
of the corporation.
During World War II, Mr. McCone was president and general
manager of the California Shipbuilding Corporation. He was also
a director of two other shipbuilding corporations during this
period. In 1945, California Shipbuilding Corporation increased
its ownership position in the stock of Joshua Hendy Iron Works
in Sunnyvale, California and Mr. McCone became president of that
company.
In 1947, the name of California Shipbuilding Corporation, which.
now owned all of the assets of Joshua Hendy Iron Works, was changed
to Joshua Hendy Corporation and Mr. McCone, remained as president
and director. He served as the company's chief executive officer
since 1941 with the exception of those periods when he has been
in full time capacity with the United States Government. He is
now retired from this position.
In 1947, he was a member of the President's Air Policy Com-
mission; during 1948, Mr. McCone served as Special Deputy to
Secretary of Defense James Forrestal.
From June, 1950 to 1951, Mr. McCone was Under Secretary of
the Department of the Air Force. In 1954, he served on the Secre-
tary of State's Committee on Personnel; from June 1958 until
January 1961, he served as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.
In September, 1961, Mr. McCone was appointed Director of Central
Intelligence and he served in this post until 1965 when he resigned

and returned to Los Angeles, where he resumed his business activities-
In 1979, Mr. and Mrs. McCone "retired" and moved their home to
Pebble Beach, on the Monterey Peninsula.
Mr. McCone is an honorary member of the Board of Directors of
International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation, (Director Emeritus).
He has also served as a director on several corporate boards, including
Pacific Mutual Life Insurance, United California Bank, Standard Oil
of California, PACCAR(-in Seattle, Wash, and Western Bancorporation-
Mr. McCone has been active in educational and medical institiutions,
as a trustee at the University of Southern California, Monterey
Institute of International Studies, Charles Drew Postgraduate Medical
School, and the House Ear Institute, among others.
In January, 1964, Mr. McCone was appointed a member of the
President's Advisory Committee on the Supersonic Transport.
Following the riots in Los Angeles, in August, 1965, Mr. McCone
was appointed Chairman of the Governor's Commission on the Los Angeles
Riots. The Commission Report has since been studied widely throughout
the country. In July, 1966, Mr. McCone was appointed a member of the
National Advisory Commission on Selective Service. In 1972, he was
appointed a member of the President's Advisory Committee on Disarmament
and Arms Control.
