MEMORANDUM FOR: Deputy Director for Operations
FROM: Director of Central Intelligence
SUBJECT: Soviet Book Distribution
1. Do our book people have information on the books the Soviets
distribute around the world? I have been asked. by USIA whether we can
verify that they distribute 88 million books annually, most of them in
English. The US distributed 17 million books in 19&8 and this has shrunk
down to 560,000.
2. Walt Raymond also wants this information and may be of assistance
on the source from which it can be developed. Indeed, he may well be the
source of the 560,000 number USIA cited. The USIA request comes from a
former Director of USIA who is currently chairing a commission Seci~etary
Shultz appointed to advise on whether we should stay in USESCO. This
gentleman, Leonard Marks, is looking for the book information in his
capacity as consultant to USIA.
