Approved For Release 2010/02/26: CIA-RDP88B00443R001604220054-1 ? ? 4 September 1984 MEMORANDUM FOR: National Intelligence Officer for General Purpose Forces FROM: Director of Central Intelligence SUBJECT: US Military Strategy in Europe and Book Review of Operation Barbarossa 1. I enjoyed reading your speech on US military strategy in Europe. 2. I also enjoyed reading the book review of Operation Barbarossa. Have you ever read Walter Kerr's book on the secret of Stalingrad? It came out about ten years ago and spells out how Stalin sucked in and surrounded the Germans by having ten reserve armies which he kept secret from everyone- the enemy, his allies, even his own generals.
