Fitzwater Deputy Director for Administration SUBJECT: Memo of Appreciation 1. By now I am sure that you are aware that the Government prevailed in its case against Ronald Rewald. In addition to bringing a criminal to justice, Rewald's conviction was a significant victory for the Agency since his defense consisted of false claims of Agency sponsorship of his activities. This victory was not without substantial cost to the Agency in financial resources and manpower. For more than two years, scores of Agency employees in all parts of the Agency working with the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation spent considerable time and effort in applying their particular expertise in preparation of the Government's case against Rewald. 2. In addition to our usual problems of security, cover and compartmentation, this effort was further complicated by the fact that the proceedings and trial were held over 6,000 miles away in Hawaii. These difficulties notwithstanding, the Directorate of Administration's response to all requirements was timely, accurate, and complete whether it was for affidavits, testimony, records searches, copies of documents, equipment or secure communications. 3. Please accept my sincere appreciation for your part in this Agency-wide effort to bring a criminal to justice and at the same time protect sensitive Agency equities. It was truly a demonstration of the excellence that characterizes the support provided by this Directorate. ry E..
