M.S IS INFORMATION SCIENCE 3000 S W AVALON WAY SEATTLE WASHINGTON 98126 15 October 1985 Mr. William J. Casey Director of Central Intelligence Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D. C. 20505 Dear Mr. Casey: It is well established in the computer industry that the cost of accurately maintaining programs occupies a major portion of the software budget. It not only consumes a large segment of human and machine resources, but, if incorrectly performed can delay crucial projects and possibly compromise security or other interests. I have developed methods for maintaining programs that will reduce the time for software modification while ensuring accuracy. The most promising method is described in an unpublished paper of mine entitled "A Language of Mnemonics for Maintenance Programming." It essentially stabilizes the naming process for filenames, variables, and software routines, thereby making it easier for both experienced and novice programmers to comprehend a program's function. My current work is available and can be developed into extremely useful programming aides. Please feel at liberty to contact me for additional information if you are interested in pursuing this matter further. Sincerely, ti Dennis D.
