The Honorable
William J. Casey
Director of Central Intelligence
Central Intelligence Agency
Washington, D.C. 20505
As George Lauder has probably told you already, U.S.News
is working on an extensive story about the transformations
that have taken place at the CIA under your leadership. While
there are critics, we find that you also have a good number
of admirers, and it is our sincere hope that we will present
a balanced, objective story to our 12 million readers. Toward
that end, two of the top editors of the magazine recently met
with Mr. Lauder for lunch, and there have been a number of
subsequent conversations with him.
All of us here are convinced that our treatment would
be much better if it would be possible:
(a) to sit down with you in an interview, talking about
what you have tried to do with the agency, its importance to
the U.S., the role you envision for it in the future, etc.
As you know from past interviews with the magazine, we
would provide you with a transcript that you could review
for factual errors prior to publication.
(b) To arrange some special photographs of you at the
agency (or elsewhere, if you prefer, though the agency site
is our preference).
Our expectation is that, barring a major news development
the preceding week, this story would be published on June 9.
We are looking at it as a strong candidate for the cover.

In past years, this magazine has generally maintained a
good relationship with you and with the agency because we try
to play it straight up. It is our intention to uphold that
tradition; we feel that an interview plus the photos would
greatly assist in that regard.
Many thanks for your consideration.
With every good wish,
Sincerely,
