Washington, D.C. 20505 National Intelligence Council Dr. Hoyt Purvis, Director Fulbright. Institute of International Relations J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences The University of Arkansas Fayetteville, Arkansas 72701 Dear Dr. Purvis, 13 February 1986 Thank you for your very kind invitation to be a Visiting Fellow at the Fulbright Institute of International Relations during the week of April 14. I apologize for inconveniencing you, but I find that I simply can't get away this spring, and hence must decline your thoughtful invitation. I dropped a note to that effect to Bill Jackson, late last week; our two letters doubtless crossed in the mails. I enthusiastically recommend a colleague of mine to you as a possible Visiting Fellow, especially if one of your central interests is East Asian affairs. This is Carl. W. Ford, Jr..(no relation), who at present is National Intelligence Officer/East Asia, and was a senior foreign affairs staff officer for several years with the U.S. Senate. He is a deeply knowledgeable and highly articulate senior officer. In any event, all best wishes for your Institute and its programs. I wish I could.be a part of them. Perhaps I can see you all at another .time. Sincerely, Harold P. Ford Vice Chairman pproved For Release 2011/07/08: CIA-RDP88T00988R000100080027-5 Approved For Release 2011/07/08: CIA-RDP88T00988R000100080027-5 THE UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences Commemorative Year, 1981-82 February 3, 1986 Harold P. Ford Vice-Chairman National Intelligence Council CIA Headquarters Washington, D.C., 20505 I am writing to invite you to be a Visiting Fellow at the Fulbright Institute of International Relations during the week of April 14. We would like for you to be with us for two or three days, during which there would be a public lecture, several classroom visits, and an informal discussion with faculty at a colloquium at the Institute. Given your present position, I realize that you cannot necessarily speak on sensitive current matters relating to American foreign policy. From the standpoint of the Institute, we would like to have you focus on major themes, trends, and problems in world affairs. For example, the annual Fulbright Institute symposium this year will consider such topics as the power of communications and instant awareness in world politics, and the power of imagery in international relations. As soon as your schedule takes shape for the spring, please let us know if these proposed dates would be acceptable to you. We could then work on a more precise schedule of your activities. The Fulbright Institute is, of course, prepared to cover your travel costs. It will be a pleasure to see you again.
