KANDAHAR COMPLEX, AFGH N STAN
1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: A PROBABLE SOVIET SWEEP OPERATION IS IN
PROGRESS.
2. (S/D) REMARKS: A PROBABLE SOVIET URBAN SWEEP OPERATION IS IN
PROGRESS IN THE EAST AREA OF THE COMPLEX. TWO TANKS, SIX
BTR-60 ARMORED PERSONNEL CARRIERS (APC) (FIVE ON GRAPHIC), FIVE
BMP APC (ONE ON GRAPHIC), TWO PROBABLE BRDM APC (NOT ON
GRAPHIC), AND TWO PROBABLE ARMORED VEHICLES (NOT ON GRAPHIC)
ARE DEPLOYED NORTH AND SOUTH OF A MAJOR INTERSECTION. SEVEN
GAZ-66, INCLUDING TWO PROBABLE VASILEK MORTARS, ARE PARKED JUST
SOUTH OF THE INTERSECTION. A COLUMN OF APPROXIMATELY 30
PROBABLE TROOPS IS MOVING EAST ON THE ROAD LEADING INTO THIS
AREA. THIS ACTIVITY WAS NOT PRESENT
NORMAL PEDESTRIAN AND VEHICULAR ACTIVITY IS NOT OBSERVED IN THE
VICINITY OF THE INTERSECTION, BUT IS OBSERVED IN OTHER
CLOUD-FREE AREAS OF THE CITY.
(S/D) KANDAHAR COMPLEX IS 250 NM SOUTHWEST OF KABUL IN SOUTHERN
AFGHANISTAN.
