1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: A KNOWN CUBAN ARMS CARRIER HAS ARRIVED AT
A PORT ON NICARAGUA'S WEST COAST.
2. (S/D) REMARKS: ONE CUBAN AMBER ISLAND-CLASS MERSHIP, ONE OF
THREE SHIPS IN A CLASS OF CUBAN ARMS CARRIERS, IS AT SAN JUAN
DEL SUR PORT FACILITIES. A SHIP OF THIS CLASS WAS AT HAMHUNG
PORT FACILITIES , NORTH KOREA,
AND IS BELIEVED TO BE FERRYING ARMS FROM NORTH KOREA TO
NICARAGUA. THE MERCHANT SHIP IS ANCHORED IN THE ROADSTEAD AND
CARGO IS PROBABLY BEING OFFLOADED BY A LIGHTER. PRESENTLY TIED
ALONGSIDE. AT LEAST TEN PILES OF CANVAS-COVERED MATERIAL ARE
IN THE TRANSSHIPMENT AREA (NOT ON GRAPHIC). NONE OF THE
MATERIAL CAN BE IDENTIFIED AS MILITARY EQUIPMENT; NOR CAN ARMS
BE SEEN ONBOARD THE SHIP.
