'BACKFIRE PREFLIGHT ACTIVITY

1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: PREFLIGHT ACTIVITY UNDERWAY AT BELAYA,
INVOLVING ONE OF THE TWO BACKFIRE B REGIMENTS, SUGGESTS THAT AN
AIR-TO-SURFACE MISSILE (ASM) TRAINING EXERCISE MAY BE ABOUT TO
BEGIN.
2. (S/D) REMARKS: SIX OF 18 BACKFIRE B IN THE DISPERSAL AREA HAVE
NINE TZ-22 REFUELERS AND NINE GROUND SERVICE VEHICLES NEARBY.
ELEVEN ADDITIONAL GROUND SERVICE VEHICLES ARE PARKED IN AN
AIRCRAFT REVETMENT IN THE DISPERSAL AREA. TWO OF THE FIVE
KITCHEN ASM IN THE ASM SUPPORT FACILITY ARE PROBABLY UNDERGOING
SYSTEMS CHECKOUT, AND ONE KITCHEN IS IN TOW ON THE PARALLEL
TAXIWAY. EARLY PREPARATIONS FOR THIS ACTIVITY WERE OBSERVED ON
WHEN AT LEAST 11 BACKFIRE B HAD CREW-ACCESS
PLATFORMS NEARBY.
(S/D) BELAYA AIRFIELD, 110 NM NORTH OF THE USSR-MONGOLIA
BORDER, SUPPORTS TWO BACKFIRE B REGIMENTS SUBORDINATE TO THE
IRKUTSK AIR ARMY AND AN AIR DEFENSE FIDDLER REGIMENT
SUBORDINATE TO THE NOVOSIBIRSK AIR DEFENSE DISTRICT.
