1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: A SOVIET AMMUNITION STORAGE AREA HAS BEEN
DESTROYED, POSSIBLY BY REBEL FORCES.
2. (S/D) REMARKS: THE DOUBLE FENCE-SECURED AMMUNITION STORAGE
AREA IMMEDIATELY WEST OF THE MOTORIZED RIFLE REGIMENT VEHICLE
PARK IN KABUL DEPLOYMENT AREA SW HAS BEEN DESTROYED. MUNITIONS
IN FIVE REVETMENTS AS WELL AS TWO STACKS OF PROBABLE MUNITIONS
STORED IN THE OPEN BETWEEN THE REVETMENTS, INTACT ON
WERE DESTROYED BY AN EXPLOSION. FOUR PROBABLE
TRUCKS (TWO OF WHICH ARE PROBABLY DESTROYED), ONE ARMORED
VEHICLE, AND ONE BULLDOZER ARE WITHIN THE STORAGE AREA. FIVE
TANKS ARE DEFENSIVELY DEPLOYED ON THE PERIMETER OF THE STORAGE
AREA.
(S/D) EXPLOSION OCCURRED
IN THIS AREA ON 1 MAY 1982 AT HOURS KABUL TIME. THE EARLY
MORNING TIME OF THE REPORTED EXPLOSION AND THE PRESENCE OF
DEFENSIVELY DEPLOYED TANKS, SUGGESTS THE EXPLOSION WAS A RESULT
OF REBEL ACTION RATHER THAN AN ACCIDENT.
(S/D) KABUL IS 165 NM SOUTH OF THE USSR-AFGHANISTAN BORDER AND
90 NM WEST OF THE AFGHANISTAN-PAKISTAN BORDER IN EAST-CENTRAL
AFGHANISTAN.
