Reginald W. Griffith, Executive Director of the National
Capital Planning Commission, reported today that a fraudulent
letter addressed to "Friend[s] of the L'Enfant plan" and
purported to be from him has been circulated to a number of
public officials and citizens in the National Capital Region.
The letter, dated June 2, 1986, concerns a bogus draft bill,
which has been crafted to resemble typical bills introduced
in the U.S. Senate. Mr. Griffith stated that both the
letter and draft bill are fake and should be given absolutely
no credence. He indicated that he was reluctant to dignify
the crudely prepared letter and sham bill by reporting on
them but that their apparent widespread distribution to
public officials and representatives of citizen organizations
in the area necessitated his bringing the matter to public
attention.
The fake letter includes a request that recipients provide
their views on the so-called draft bill. Ivy. Griffith urged
that all recipients simply ignore that request and instead
notify him of their receipt of the bogus letter. He noted
that he is turning this apparent violation of Federal la-v
over to appropriate Federal law enforcement and investigative
authorities and that information as to who has received the
fake letter and bill may be helpful in identifying the person
or persons responsible for this sham.
