Dear John:
I am writing to thank you for your thoughtful letter to
Chairman Mazzoli concerning H.R. 5164. Current plans are for
the Subcommittee to mark-up the bill and report it to the full
Government Operations Committee in time for action by the
Committee and subsequent House passage this session. Thus I am
still guardedly optimistic.
Unfortunately, Representative English and Department of
Justice people are not actively discussing any possibility for
compromise on the Privacy Act (b)(3) exemption issue. I do
hope, therefore, that your suggested compromise will catch
someone's attention.
Your excellent testimony in February and your continuing
support for this legislation is greatly appreciated.
