George:
This will confirm our activities during the week of November 5th
to establish a test program at the Ranch for the reworked Hand Controls
and Drift Sights. During the month of October a tremendous concentration
of effort went into a systematic analysis and corrections of problems in
the Hand Control. As the resultant success of the work was not evident
until this past week it was not possible to use routine communication
channels for requesting test facilities and schedules. Consequently, most
of the communication has been verbal through 25X1
A request for flight tests during the week of November 12, 1956
was made of who agreed to coordinate with the Ranch. A similar 25X1
request and outline of the tests involved was made t of Hycon. 25X1
Further, our representative at the Ranch, was alerted to 25X1
our needs in the form of equipment.
Two prime programs have been laid out and are contained in the
attached test programs "A" and "B"., both for Hand Controls.
Briefly program "A" is to prove and evaluate the success of our
rework on the Hand Control. Chief areas in this direction have been the
re-routing the flexible control cables between Hand Control and Drift Sight.
This was accomplished by E.F.M. and W.A.S. during October 1956. In addition,
we have eliminated backlash in two gear meshes and have simplified the
mechanics of boresighting.
Program "B" is a test of a breadboard construction of a device
which attaches to the Hand Control (to the 'Track" knob shaft) and sets
the INC potentiometer by timing the transition of a ground object through a
fixed, known angle indicated in the Drift Sight's field of view.
In view of the continued presence of Detachment C with its equip-
ment the scheduling of these programs should present no great problem.
A team of three of our engineers plus our technical representative
will conduct the tests at the Ranch during November 12th through November 16th,
1956.
