MISSION - 6012 arrived at HTA on 3 July 1958 at 2245. 2. Photography is of excellent quality. Cloud cover obscured much of the land area from the point of landfall at the mouth of the Min River (26?03N 119?05'E) to JJI-AN (28?0ON 120045'B). Target areas north of JUI-AN were all cloud free. 3. Only noted variations with the AIRFIELDS AND SEAPLANE STATIONS OF THE WORLD pertaining to airfield facilities are reported. STJ(ARY : Excellent coverage was obtained of 8 active, 3 inactive and 2 abandoned airfields. A total of ~ Fagot/Fresco, 1 Beagle, 4 possible Bark, and 1 possible Bat was observed. No unusual concentration of landing craft or naval vessels was noted in the SHANGHAI,HANG-CHOU BAY or the CHOU-SHAN Island areas. Three submarines under construction were noted at the KIANGNAN NAVAL DOCKYARD in SHANGHAI. Two previously unreported barracks areas were observed in the HANG-CHOU area. 1. LU-CHIAO AIRFIELD 28?34'N - 121?25'E Aircraft observed: 58 Fagot/Fresco- 2. TING-HAI AIRFIELD AND SEAPLANE STATION 30?00'N - 122?07'E The airfield and the seaplane station are abandoned. 3. TAI-SHAH AIFlF'IELD 30?17'N - 122?08 E No aircraft observed. 4. Nine Patrol Escort vessels, four motor torpedo boats, one 340' tanker, two 145' unidentified vessels, plus numerous small probable fishing craft were observed in TING-HAI harbor. 5. SEEN CHIA MEN ANCHORAGE 29?57' - 122?17 E Approximately 350 junks and sampans (average length 65' and 10 vessels (approximately 120' each) were observed anchored in the SHEN-CHIA-MEN area. 6. CHOU-SEAN TAO 30?05' N - 122?10 Numerous barracks areas, and several artillery and vehicle parks were noted on the island. 7. YIN-HSIEN AIRFIELD 29?48'N - 121?28'E The airfield is abandoned. 8. CHANG CHIAO AIRFIELD 29?55'N - 121?34 E Aircraft observed: 26 probable Fagot/Fresco. No change was noted on small scale, oblique photography. HANG-CHOU 30?15'N - 120?l0' E The city of HANG-CHOU and surrounding area is covered by photography of excellent quality. a. Aircraft observed., 63 Fresco. No Beagle were observed at this airfield. b. A military barracks area, previously unreported, is located 9.5 nautical miles southwest of HANG-CHOU. This area contains at least 150 barracks type building plus 20 possible artillery pieces. c. A second unreported military barracks area, located 5 nautical miles west of HANG-CHOU contains at least 200 barracks buildings, 25 artillery pieces and three storage areas. 10. CHIA HSING AIRFIELD 30043'N - 120?41 E Aircraft observed: 42 Fagot/Fresco, 1 Coach/Crate. 11. SHANGHAI AREA 31?14'N - 121?28'E The city of SHANGHAI and the surrounding area is covered by excellent photography. a. HUNG-CHIAO AIRFIELD 31?l3'N - 121?21 E Aircraft observed: 64 Fresco, 1 possible Fred, and 2 Fresco minus tail assemblage. The runway has been extended 760' to the south and a new apron and a taxiway have been constructed. b. LUNG-HUA AFIELD 31?10'N - 121027 E Aircraft observed: 19 probable Beast, 2 Fresco, and 4 Cab. A new apron has been constructed along the north turnoff taxiway. dC CHIANG-WAN AIRFIELD 31?20'N - 121?30'E Aircraft observed: 18 Fagot/Fresco and 1 possible Bata e. WU-SUNG AIRFIELD 31?25'N - 121?27 No aircraft were noted on this airfield. The airfield does not appear to be in use by aircraft and may not be serviceable. f. K[ARGNAN NAVAL DOCKYARD 31?12'N - 121?29'E Three probable "W" class submarines are in various stages of construction. In addition, 8 unidentified ships ranging in size from 220' to 420' are under construction and/or repair. New buildings and shipways have been constructed in the dockyard area. go MOLLER'S ENGINEERING WORKS 31?16'N - 121?34'E Three 264' PF (Escort Vessels) are alongside the shipyard dock. In addition, three possible PF, approximately 242', are under construction on the building ways. A number of changes have been effected subsequent to 1954 photo coverage including construction of new shipways and buildings. OTHER NAVAL AND MERCHANT VESSELS IN THE SHANGHAI AREA Naval vessels include a possible KRONSTADT PC (Patrol Craft) in the International Drydock, 3 possible AN (net tender), 2 PGM (Motor gun boat) and 20 probable PT (Motor torpedo boats). Merchant shipping includes 22 cargo vessels ranging in length from 220' to 500', 2 tankers 264' and 330' in length. In addition, several hundred small craft were noted. These include miscellaneous river craft, barges and possibly some small military vessels. 12. WU HSIEN BARRACKS AND STORAGE AREAS 31?18'N - l20?36'E Military barracks and storage areas are located approximately 15 miles west of WU-HSIEN, 13. WU-HSI AIRFIELD 31?31'N - 120?27'E The runway has been extended to the east. Small scale, oblique photography precludes detailed interpretation.
