Approved For Rease 2002/08/21 : CIA-RDP89B009800200170057-3 SECRET IDEA 2320-65 Copy_z_of ~} " 5 January 1965 MEMORANDUM FOR: Chief, Materiel Division, OSA SUBJECT: Droppable Fuel Tanks REFERENCE: Wing Pylon Drop Tank Installation Proposal; dated 30 October 1964 (ECP LAC 174-1) 1. It is not clear to personnel of this Division whether referenced proposal includes provisions for cockpit indication that fuel in the droppable tanks has been expended. Because safe return of the aircraft might depend on transfer of all fuel from the tanks prior to their being jettisoned, we believe it manda- tory that some means of determining fuel quantity be included. Part A of the proposal makes reference to "two pressure switches to provide cockpit indication", but this appears to provide an indication only of tank pressurization and not of fuel quantity. 2. Request you ensure that installation of droppable fuel tanks includes some means of indicating to the pilot the amount of fuel remaining in the droppable tanks, or that all fuel has been expended.
