22 July regarding U-2N Aircraft
REFERENCE: (a) Memorandum for the Record, dated 20 July 1965,
Subject: Informal Cost Projections on Additional
U-2 Procurement (IDEA-2709-65)
(b) dated 21 July 1965
1. In connection with the questions asked by in
ref. (b) pertaining to a possible procurement of seventeen or irty-
five new U-2's, Mr. Johnson stopped in my office the morning of
22 July to give me the following ball park figures which he had
obviously obtained on the telephone from his office in Burbank follow-
ing our meeting in Headquarters the morning of 21 July:
Seventeen aircraft at the rate of one per month

2. Because he had not answered all of the questions that were
raised at the 21 July briefing, I gave Kelly a copy of the cable
(ref. (b)) which had been sent to him the evening of 21 July, and which
he had not received as yet. I told him that we did need these answers
in time to crank them into our response to which was
due in the Pentagon not later than 1 August.
1 August was on a week-end we might well be called on to produce
the paper by 30 July. He said that he would make every effort to
give us the fiscal year spread requested in ref. (b) in timely fashion.
