5. Soviet Ballistic Missile Defense: Preparations were initiated in June
to reconvene the BMD Working Group in order to develop the follow-up report
for the DCI documenting the status and results of implementing the
recommendations contained in the Soviet BMD Study. With the completion of the
Perry Panel report on Soviet BMD, it was decided to reactivate the working
group now and incorporate the Perry Panel recommendations into the CIPC
follow-up report for the DCI. The reconstituted working group is scheduled to
finish its review by August and the follow-up report is eduled to be
addressed by the CIPC at the September meeting.
6. International Narcotics Activities: The Narcotics Working Group is in
the final stage of completing its o ow-up report for the DCI. After
coordination by the working group members, the draft will be forwarded to CIPC
Principals prior to the next CIPC Meeting on 5 August. The report as now
written presents a rather striking record of accomplishment with over 80
percent of the recommendations already in effect or are in the process of
being implemented. This is not to suggest that the narcotics intelligence
challenge has been met, but when contrasted to the situati n a few years ago
the progress in this area has been significant.
7. Terrorism Study: The Terrorism Study has been forwarded to the NFIC
Principals for eir review and coordination by 12 July 198 Subsequently,
the study will be forwarded to the DCI for his approval.
