President Reagan has pursued a consistent policy of seeking closer political, economic, cultural, and military relations with Beijing. In March 1981, the President informed the Chinese that the United States viewed its relations with the PRC as fundamentally different from our hostile and uneasy relationship with the Soviet Union. The United States receives political and strategic advantages from its relations with China. This relationship is based on a mutual perception that neither country now poses a threat to the other's sovereignty, that the Soviet Union constitutes the primary security threat to both, and that the two countries share a common interest in peace and stability in the Asian region.
