SUBJECT: AIDS Briefing on 5 October 1987
1. The Armed Forces Medical Intelligence Center (AFMIC) will present a
one hour briefing on the AIDS pandemic to the Intelligence Community Staff in
Room 61402, at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, 5 October 1987.
2. The first half of this briefing will review the virology of the HIV
virus and the pathology of the various AIDS diseases in lay terminology. Then
the worldwide implications of the AIDS threat to public health, medical
economics, cultural change, political stability, and military readiness will
be surveyed.
3. This is an extremely sobering briefing. The recent SNIE 70/1-87
barely begins to present the full scope of the AIDS pandemic and its threat to
international order.
4. Incidentally, AFMIC is located at Fort Detrick, Maryland. One facet
of the Soviet disinformation campaign on AIDS is the assertion that HIV is the
product of laboratory testing at Fort Detrick.
5. Seating will be on first come basis. The briefing is SECRET, but
remarks will be made at the SI/TK level.
