Dear Bob:
I'm writing in response to your letter asking me to stay on as Chairman of
STAP through September 1988.
I first want to thank you for asking me to continue. I greatly appreciate
the trust and confidence expressed in your request. I have always found my
work with STAP to be both meaningful and enjoyable, and I share your belief
that the Panel offers a useful outside perspective.
I do believe that turnover and new blood are important for any advisory
group and am thus reluctant to stay in the chair too long. Nevertheless, I
agree with your point about the need for continuity and therefore accept your
offer. I shall do my best to ensure that both you and the DCI continue to
find STAP a valuable resource, and I especially look forward to continuing our
working relationship.
