+ FBIS London Bureau provided the first full text report, on
22 July, of General Secretary Gorbachev's proposal for the elimination of
all medium-range and shorter-range INF missiles in Asia. Gorbachev's
announcement of the new Soviet position on these weapons was first
published in the Indonesian newspaper WRDEKA and carried by the 23 July
issue of the Moscow paper SELSKAYA ZHIZN. FBIS intercepted the facsimile
transmission via satellite of the Moscow paper the day before publication
+ In response to a request from Commander, Middle East Forces, the
Analysis Group prepared a report on a series of statements and
"clarifications" by Iranian leaders of Tehran's "new polirv of
retaliation" against Iraqi attacks in the Persian Gulf.
