Per our conversation on 13 August, I am sending you FBIS/Production Group's requirements for the Undergraduate Scholar Program. 2. FBIS/Production Group hires people with strong reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages to monitor developments in the foreign press. We particularly need applicants fluent in critical, non-European languages such as Russian, Chinese, Arabic and Japanese. Applicants for the Undergraduate Scholar Program in FBIS must therefore have an aptitude for and interest in foreign languages, demonstrated by high achievement in foreign language classes or high scores on a language aptitude test. Since it will probably prove difficult to locate high school students or college freshmen with non-European language skills, we will consider students who have studied more common European languages (French, Spanish) and are willing to learn Russian, Chinese, Arabic, or Japanese. 3. applicants should also be interested in international affairs or a discipline such as science, economics, political science or history. Because work in Production Group involves a great deal of reading and some writing, applicants should be interested primarily in intellectual pursuits rather than applied or people-oriented activities. They should also have a good command of written English. 4. Based on our experience with the Program this year, we suggest that all applicants be briefed on the program and our interest in non-European languages before they come to FBIS for an interview. We will be glad to provide language tests if you consider these appropriate. S. I am attaching a recruitment flyer that describes the work of a foreign language officer in FBIS. Although written for regular applicants, it may be helpful in describing job options to undergraduate scholar candidates. cc: D/FBIS STAT Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2012/06/20: CIA-RDP90-00065R000100110045-2
