CONFIDENTIAL Approved For Rele~e 2003/04/23: CIA-RDP90-00509ROOq~Q0030008-6 2 i Hui ]978 NIEMGRANDUM FOR: Director of Central Intell~ge~c~~ ,\~' r V ~. FROM: epu y o e CI for Cal ection Tasking SUBJECT: Possible Reduction of Air Force Translation of Soviet Documents 1. (U) Action Requested: None. This is for your information only. 2. (C) Background: a. You may recall discussing our Open Source Collection (OSCOL) review at the 4th of August luncheon meeting. You mentioned that you had heard-that the Air Force is cutting back its program of translation of'Soviet papers in the field of military doetrin.e, and you asked whether this is correct. b. 4~de have made a number of checks on this subject, and are unable to find any indication to that effect. The Air Force's Soviet Awareness program, which is particularly concerned with Soviet military doctrine, uses some of the same facilities we are dealing with in our OSCOL review. None of them is aware of any cutback in translations. c. The translation facility which directly supports the Air Force's Soviet Awareness program, as well as other Air Force interests in Soviet doctrinal material, is the Literature Research Division of the Air Force Intelligence Service (AFIS) Directorate of Soviet Affairs (AFIS/INCF). It is presently processing its 15th volume in the continuing "Soviet Military Thought" series with volumes 16-18 at various manuscript stages. T'he monthly AFIS "Soviet Selected Press Translations," a regular 30-40 page selection of Soviet writings on military doctrine strate and foreign affairs, continues undiminished. who heads the Division, advises that the "Soviet M li cry oncep s series is also continuing without reduction. This series, which consists of selected transla on of the "Soviet Military Encyelopedia,l0 was originally planne o;~ a total translation; it has been reduced to selections fob cop~~ight reasons, not because of manpower reduetiona.. d. I trust that this responds to your query. 25X1A Approved For Release 2003/04/23: CIA-RDP90-005098000100030008-6 E2 IMPDET CONFIDENTIAL CL BY 110114 Approved For Rele~e 2003/04/23: CIA-RDP90-00509R000~00030008-6 SUB,7ECT: Possible Reduction of Air Force Translation of Soviet Documents (U) Distribution: Orig - DCI 1 - DDCI 1 - ER 1 - RM/CT Registry 1 - D/DCI/CT 1 - AD/DCI/CT 1 - D/OHT Chrono 1 - OHT Chrono DCI/CT/OHT~ (18 Aug 78) Approved For Release 2003/04/23: CIA-RDP90-005098000100030008-6 25X1A ~]~"U~ICLASSIFIED _ r' SRNAL x CONF' 'NTIAL ^ SECRE~'~~~ RdUTING AND RECORD SHEET _ SUBJECT: (Optional) Possible Reducti~?r. a Air Force Translation of ~.
