Journalist groups want the media
first in line for information...
Testifying before a Senate Govern-
mental Affairs subcommittee, Jack C.
Landau, representing the Reporters
Committee for Freedom of the Press
and the Society of Professional Jour-
nalists, said the passage of the Flee-
dom of Information Act in 1967 "has
not produced the type of prompt and
effective disclosure of government
information for the press and the
general public that was envisioned."
The press - and by extention, the
public.- should come -first, before
businesses and law firms and should
be charged at a lower rate for proc-
essing of requests,, he said. Due to
time and money problems, he said,
less than 5 percent of all information
requests.are made by journalists,
scholars and writers seeking infor-
mation to disseminate to the public.
He noted that agencies like the CIA
.and FBI are unable to respond to
requests for information within the
30 days spelled out by the act.
