The Afghans PROGRAM Braden & Buchanan DATE October 29, 1980 6:08 PM CITY Washington, DC SUBJECT An Interview with John Boyer PAT BUCHANAN: ...Mr. Boyer is an adviser, both military and political, to the Afghan freedom fighters and, here in the United States, is the president of an organization, I guess, called Freedom in Action. Can you telI us about your organization, your purpose in this country and the situation in Afghanistan? JOHN BOYER: ...Well, its to try and alert the Western world, and the leader of the Western world, America, as to the vital significance of Afghanistan to Western security. And my little group, Freedom in Action in London, is not only assisting the Afghans, but also it is ready to advise and help to make an Issue of communist oppression worldwide. Afghans? BUCHANAN: All right. How are you assisting the BOYER: At this moment, we are relaying their cause and what is happening out there on radio, television and?the press right here in the United States and back in Britain, and endeavoring to arrange meetings for them with members of govern- ment and to try and persuade the administrations on. both sides of the big pond to stand firm behind the Afghan resistance, which represents 99% of the Afghan people now. BUCHANAN: If it represents 99%, how successful is It? Has the Soviet Union just become strictly -- how can 85,000 Soviet troops hold down a country of --.what? -- 115,000,000 people?
