Letters to the Editor
WALL STREET JOURNAL
23 April 1985
Cockburn's "kitchen recipe for foment-
ing a Red Scare from that day to this" is
in clear disregard of the documentable
facts relating to the "Zinoviev letter" and
only. parades his dismissive attitude to-
ward truth.
The Zinoviev letter was not "concocted
by the British Foreign Office" nor is there
any evidence of "unscrupulous intelligence
analysts at the Foreign Office" colluding
with a "complicit press led by the Daily
Mail." At the time, the Soviets were more
concerned with.the"disintegration" of the
European Labor/Socialist elements than
with their more obvious enemies on the
right.. .
Who, aside from Baldwin; benefited
from the "Z" letter? Analysis of the after-
math supports strongly the argument that
the chief beneficiary was Stalin. The inci-
dent embarrassed Trotsky, (inventor of the
Comintern) and contributed. to the evi-
dence that Stalin was later to use in dispos;; .
ing of his other enemy, Zinoviev:'. ;
In four years of researching "The New
KGB: Engine of Soviet Power" (Morrow,
June, 1985) we found no facts to sustain
Cockburn's view. We do, however, concede
the correctness of his assertion that "little
lies,.' endlessly repeated, become big
lies
