On 17 August 1983, two Canadian inilitn officers 25X1 came to the Headquarters Compound where they were detained by the FPO. They explained that they were staying at Ft. Myer and had been advised by the desk clerk there to take the public tour of CIA. They presented their I.D.'s, which appeared to be valid, were advised by SDO officers about visitor's policy and were escorted from the compound as detailed in reference. (U) 2. The Provost Marshal at Ft. Myer, Major Charles Cogswell, was contacted by the undersigned on 20 August 1983 and briefed concerning this incident. He was provided with the names of the military officers and volunteered to check the registration at the visiting officer's quarters to determine if the officers were registered. He agreed to brief the desk clerks at the visiting quarters that the Agency does not conduct public tours. (U) 3. On 7 September 1983, Verona Hughes, a desk clerk at Ft. Myer, provided a copy of the registration for the two military officers who stayed at the visiting officer's quarters from 12 to) 14 August. Mrs. Hughes said she may have suggested to them that they take the FBI tour. She did not mention CIA. (U) 4.. The three desk clerks on duty, including Mrs. Hughes, were advised that there are no public tours at CIA. It is recommended that this case be closed in OSB.
