DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY
UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY
ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND 21402
Mr. Clarence "Kelly" Johnson
Lockheed Corporation
P. O. Box 551
Burbank, California 91520
It is my pleasure to formally invite you to speak at the 1921 annual
East Coast Aeronautical Engineering Duty Officer (AEDO) Symposium to be
held 25 September 1981 at the United States Naval Academy.
As Commander Paul Schlein indicated in your recent phone conversation,
the theme of the short symposium is "The Evolving Technologies for Naval
Aviation in the '80's." Invited speakers will include Vice Admiral Dick
Seymour, Commander of the Naval Air Systems Command. Attendance of approx-
imately seventy Aeronautical Engineering Duty Officers assigned to the
Pentagon and the Systems Commands in Washington, Flight Test in Patuxent
River, and numerous research and development and operational activities on
the East Coast is expected.
The luncheon will be addressed by Vice Admiral William P. Lawrence,
the present Superintendent of the Naval Academy (former POW and F8U-3 test
pilot). Sir Frank Whittle will regale the symposium attendees and their
spouses and friends at an evening banquet with the story of his turbojet
engine development of the '30's. You are cordially invited to be our guest
at these events as well.
As the details of the symposium become better defined, Commander Schlein
will keep you advised. Further, Commander Schlein is now acting in reference
to your gracious offer to speak to the Naval Academy midshipmen, coordinating
that event with the appropriate individuals here.
I wish to thank you at this time for your oral acceptance of our invita-
tion to share your unique and valuable insight into the aviation technology
that will help us to continue to defend our nation.
R. L. REASONOVER
Captain, U. S. Navy
Director, Division of Mathematics
