SUBJECT: CIA Comments on Draft NSDD Pursuant to NSSD-4,
United States Security Strategy for the Near
East and Southwest Asia
1. The CIA endorses the statement of US objectives and the
broad outline of the strategy to be pursued in furtherance of those
objectives as outlined in the draft NSDD.
2. We would propose one possible addition within the section,
Cooperation with Other Countries, NATO Allies and Japan. To highlight
the need for the US and its allies to focus on opportunities to
improve our position vis-a-vis Iran, we would recommend adding as a
final sentence to that paragraph:
"They should be prepared as well to exploit
opportunities to broaden their economic --
and perhaps military -- ties to Iran in an
effort to enhance Western influence there
and reduce hostility to the US."
