On July 6, 1984, a telephone request was made by Mr.
Joel S. Lisker Chief Counsel to this Judiciary subcommittee
of of the CIA's Office of Legal Counsel for
the inancl.a isclosure statements of CIA General Counsel,
Stanley Sporkin. Mr. Lisker was informed that the statements
would be sent to him immediately.
Thereafter on July 9, 1984, Mr. Sporkin, who had
called Mr. Lisker, advised him that although he did not
object to our receiving the statements, a letter should be
sent from me requesting the statements as they were not
public records, and he did not want to set a precedent by
responding to a telephone request.
I certainly understand his concern and it is for this
reason that I am formally requesting the statements for
1981, 1982, 1983, and the first 6 months of 1984. I recognize
that no statement for the first 6 months of 1984 has been
filed, but I request that one be prepared by Mr. Sporkin and
furnished to me so that I may have the benefit of the most
current information available. These documents are for my
use and the use of the Judiciary subcommittee staff as we
examine Mr. Sporkin's qualifications for the federal bench.
