ASSOCIATE COUNSEL Honorable William J. Casey Director of Central Intelligence Washington, D. C. 20505 Dear Mr. Casey: The Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence has been asked to look into allegations that Kurt Waldheim, the former Secretary General of the United Nations, was associated with war crimes against Jews, Serbs and gypsies in Croatia during the second World War. The Committee has seen allegations to this effect in news reports but has no knowledge of whether these accusations are accurate. Accordingly, I ask that you provide the Committee with a response to the following three questions: 1. Does the intelligence community have any i.nformati.on which bears on the accusations against Mr. Waldheim? 2. Di.d the intelligence community ever receive a request from any other department or agency of the United States Government requesting information about Mr. Waldheim prior to his selection as Secretary General of the United Nations? 3. Did the intelligence community ever provide any information concerning Mr. Waldhei.m to any department or agency of the United States concerning Mr. Waldheim? I believe your staff has made a preliminary inquiry along these lines at the request of the Committee staff, for which the Committee is appreciative. The allegations at issue are serious enough, however, that they warrant careful review and a written response. With best wishes, I am Lee H. Hamilton Chairman ROOM H-405, U.S. CAPITOL (202) 225-4121 U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PERMANENT SELECT COMMITTEE ON INTELLIGENCE Lam' 1273X Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/12/10: CIA-RDP90B01390R000400480018-5
