A CIA Exception
Despite strict prohibitions
against direct ties between
the CIA and American news or-
ganizations, CIA Director Wil-
liam Casey once gave approval
for agency use of a U.S. journal-
ist on an intelligence mission-
thefirst such OK since the Iran
hostage crisis. "I've made one
exception [to the rules] in six
years," Casey said last week,
adding that the journalist was
never actually used because
the circumstances changed. A
CIA spokesman subsequently
declined to give further details,
except to indicate that the inci-
dent occurred early in the Rea-
gan administration.
