1. SSCI staffers called today to alert OLL to an
initiative of interest being undertaken in the Senate. A
"Dear Colleague" letter is being circulated by Senator Frank
Lautenberg (Dem-NJ) soliciting co-signers for a letter to
Attorney General Meese suggesting (or demanding?) that a
warrant be drawn up for Yasir Arafat in the case of the 1973
assassination of US Ambassador Noel in the Sudan. Hard
copies of the letter are not yet available to OLL.
2. It will be recalled that Senator Arlen Specter
(Rep-PA), an SSCI member, recently wrote the DCI regarding
his interest in Arafat's involvement in the 1973 incident.
(The Senator's interest was stimulated by FOIA documents and
a press release given him by the American-Israeli Political
Action Committee in which Ambassador Walters is quoted as
alleging the existence of tapes proving Arafat's personal
guilt.) A response is being worked on by DI/NESA in
consultation with DO/NE.
3. SSCI staff suggest "more interest" will be developing
in this matter in the Senate.
