The Honorable Daniel Patrick Moynihan

Dear Senator Moynihan:
The Acting Director has asked me to respond to your letter
of 17 February 1987 in which you encouraged his attendance at
the first annual Raoul Wallenberg Award ceremony at the
Waldorf-Astoria in New York City on 4 March 1987. Regrettably,
Mr. Gates will be unable to attend the dinner due to a prior
commitment.
A copy of this response has also been sent to Senator

Mr. Robert Gates
Acting Director
Central Intelligence Agency
Washington, D.C. 20505
On March 4, 1987 H. Ross Perot will receive the first annual
Raoul Wallenberg Award at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.
The ceremony is jointly sponsored by the Raoul Wallenberg Committee
of the United States and the American Committee for Shaare Zedek
Hospital in Jerusalem.
Alan C. Greenberg, Ludwig Jesselson and Milton Petrie are the
dinner co-chairmen. You have previously received a letter of
invitation from Mr. Greenberg.
Barbara Walters will serve as mistress of ceremonies.
Several hundred prominent Americans have already indicated their
intention to attend.
Raoul Wallenberg's daring rescue of 100,000 men, women and
children from Adoph Eichmann's final chapter of Hitler's final
solution is an oft-told story of heroism. Wallenberg, who was the
Swedish Ambassador in Budapest, Hungary when Hungary was occupied
by the Nazis, was the subject of an NBC docudrama aired last year
in prime time.
As strong supporters of Shaare Zedek Hospital and admirers of
Raoul Wallenberg, we encourage you to attend this gala event. It
is our understanding that Levi Rabinowitz, the Committee's
representative in Washington, will contact your office shortly to
learn of your plans and, if necessary, to make any special
arrangements you may require.
We encourage you to attend this important function.
Sincerely,
Daniel Patrick Moyn n X1f a M. D'Amato
United States Senator Unite? States Senator
