SUBJECT: Assistance to the United States Postal Service
We request permission to provide the following assistance to another
government agency, as provided in OIT Instruction
a. Agency Assisted: United States Postal Service
b. Description of Assistance: Provide them with the upgraded NIPS
software that enables NIPS to run on the newest IBM Operating System,
IBM OS/XA.
c. Location of Assistance: CIA Headquarters Building
d. Component Involved: OIT/NSEG/OSD/BSB
e. Basis for Activity:
o We are the only Government Agency to have the new NIPS
software. Since the DOD stopped actively maintaining NIPS,
we have become the primary NIPS user. We were the first
to bring in the new IBM Operating System, which requires
modifications to NIPS.
o Having another installation at our level of NIPS could be
beneficial in terms of problem resolution.
o It is in the interest of the U.S. Government that the
requesting agency not have to redo all of the work
already done.
f. Financial Cost: The new version of NIPS will be sent to them on
one reel of magnetic tape. The several ,jobs that need to be run will
consume less than one half-hour of wall-clock machine time.
g. Manpower: All of the assistance-related activities will require
one man-week.
